Is The Media Finally Getting It?

It seems as if many of our pals in the media and on the blogosphere are finally getting it. Let's 'count it all joy.'

The Socialites featured on this blog are more than professional posers looking to 'get their shine on.'

This brand of Socialite comes with skills, talent, and a broad network of contacts - enabling them to move about effortlessly in various circles and settings.

They are committed to the greater good not just what's good for them.

There was much buzz in the Internet this week about White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers sitting next to Vogue Magazine's Anna Wintour during Fashion Week (thanks to Gawker for the nice citation!)

Should anyone be surprised?

Rogers has been featured in Vogue in the past.

And of course, everyone and their Mamas want an invitation to The White House.

But Rogers is one within a larger representative set of Black Socialites.

So while we celebrate her success (actually I'm standing on my head!), we also know that there are thousands of other Desiree Rogers within our communities.

So, perhaps now our media pal will begin to cover (and comment) on the difference between the posey-wosey set and the Socially Conscious Socialite - a difference that has always been present in the Black Community.

Black people rarely tolerate those who enjoy the limelight and forsake their responsibility in helping others.

So, expect that assisting others (while looking fabulous!) will remain a high priority on Ms. Rogers professional and personal agenda. She's pretty clear about this during a recent CNN interview (thanks to CNN's PR Maven Christine for supplying this link and the screen shot).
In the meanwhile, what are you working on?

Happy Valentine's Day!

I hope that you have a wonderful Valentine's Day!

Even if you treat yourself to some yummy chocolates, remember that this is also the one day a year that we set aside to tell the people we care how much they mean to us.

Don't forget to celebrate Mom, Dad, grandparents, relatives, pets, and close friends too!

I See Black People in Vogue & Vanity Fair

Photographer Annie Leibovitz does double duty photographing First Lady Michelle Obama for the March edition of Vogue Magazine and various members of The Obama Administration (including Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett and Social Secretary Desiree Rogers) for March's Vanity Fair.

The pics are great and consider picking up copies of both magazines when they are available in your hometown.

In Remembrance - Gloria Harper Dickinson

This year has started off rather challenging for me and many of my close friends as we have suffered back-to-back deaths of family members, mentors, and friends.

My Soror and Sister Link Gloria Harper Dickinson, International Regional Director of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Chair of African American Studies at The College of New Jersey died last month after a battle with breast cancer.

And truthfully everyone, this is a tough posting for me which is why I have delayed in sharing it with all of you.

Gloria was a kind lady who relished in the study and preservation of our history. The last time I saw her was on Martha's Vineyard at one of our annual Links Luncheon. Gloria was also a hard worker for our sorority - dedicating countless hours and miles of travel to ensure the implementation of quality programs and sisterhood activities.

She will be sorely missed.

White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers' NPR Interview

White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers was interviewed last week on NPR's All Things Considered regarding her new role. She speaks about diversifying images and imagery in The White House under the new administration, in addition to the emotionalism of meeting The White House butlers and maids (many of whom are Black).

She is photographed here in the background on the right in her official duties with President Obama & Mrs. Michelle Obama in a recent White House press image.

Yes, I am a Steelers fan!! And, of course Coach Mike Tomlin is going to lead this dynasty to yet another Super Bowl victory (woo-hoo!!)

I am especially proud that Coach Tomlin is the youngest coach in the NFL, a family man, an active member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, and in two years has earned the respect of his professional peers while walking in legendary shoes.

On the menu for me and the family is turkey chili, deviled eggs, popcorn shrimp, and pulled bar-be-que chicken - all of which yours truly is preparing.

I may also be single after Sunday because Special Friend is a fan of a loser team who just can't quite get their act together!

So, he's been sending me hateful emails about my team (although he did buy me some new Steelers gear.)

I'll make him stand in the corner during the game if he continues to act ugly...

In the meanwhile, enjoy yourself tonight and make sure you make it home safely!
