Friday's Fabulous Flick

Model Oluchi Onweagba demonstrates that simplicity is key at the Friends of New Yorkers For Children (NYFC) Sixth Annual Spring Dinner Dance earlier this month in New York City. The rapper Common, actress Joy Bryant, Super Socialite Maggie Betts, and music exec Kevin Lyles were also in attendance. The event raised over $380,000 to benefit youth in foster care in New York City.

I think Ms. Onweagba is one to watch. She's been seen around town some key events looking fabulous. She is also rumored to be the host of the West African version of Next Top Model.

While we're on the topic of looking fabulous...what are your plans to spruce up your wardrobe or overall look? There is no better time than the present.

The warm weather is upon us - I think...

Good people, have a great weekend!

Cheers!

Repent Negative Google-Festers!

Uggghhh!

The weather outside is really frightful. Furry Friend (my cat) is sitting near by listening to the rain. I plan to crawl under the covers to stay warm after I have some fruit and tea. Geez!

Special Friend and I just returned from our adventure at the 40th Annual Links Eastern Area Conference in Roanoke, VA. I must give a standing ovation to all of the lovely Links who worked so hard to make the conference outstanding. I’ll share more of the details with you great readers soon.

While we were there, we had the chance to chat with a certain Super Socialite who is planning her fall wedding. Apparently, fingers of cyber busy-bodies have been typing away Googling her and her soon-to-be hubby looking for information about the wedding date, location, etc.

I have to say that I am always taken aback by those who participate in Google-fests with no real purpose. I mean ok…I understand that Google-fests are a hobby for some people.

Some people are genuinely interested in learning about others they strive to emulate. One of the cool things about this blog is that many of you have become exposed to a new group of role models. So, it's natural to want to follow their stories of success on line.

But for those who cyber-stalk out of jealousy or meanness, I have a question for you.

Isn’t it easier to create your own fabulous life rather than obsessing over someone else’s?

Friday's Fabulous Flick

This week’s flick features the fabulous looking Alexis Clark (right) of Town and Country Magazine posing with Seema Mehta at The Henry Street Settlement’s annual gala recently in New York City. The event was held in honor of the philanthropic work of filmmaker Tatiana von Furstenberg.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Super Socialite Mellody Hobson & Beau George Lucas Co-Host Event At USC

One of our favorite ladies (Super Socialite Mellody Hobson) was out on the West Coast with boyfriend George Lucas on March 30th hosting the opening of the University of Southern California's School of Cinematic Arts' new facility according to Variety. Dean Elizabeth M. Daley, Carole King, James Taylor, Marilyn and Jeffrey Katzenberg (from left to right) are also in this photo.

They look really happy together so perhaps a wedding is in the works?

Juicy Bits & Pieces of News

Here's the latest chatter about those who interest us the most. Grab a cup of tea while reading this.

Super Socialite Sherry Bronfman is celebrating the birth of her grandchild from musician son Ben Brewer. The mother is 33 year old singer/rapper/songwriter M.I.A (nee Mathangi "Maya" Arulpragasam). She is most famously known for singing the catchy hook verse in the hip-hop tune ‘Swagga Like Us’ (I know what you’re thinking…close your mouths…) The baby’s birth certificate was apparently leaked on the gossip site TMZ and lists the baby’s name as Ikhyd Edgar Arular Bronfman.

Super Socialite Pamela Joyner was featured in the San Francisco Chronicle in February. She talked about decorating her sprawling pad and her philanthropic activities.

Super Socialite Desiree Rogers is maintaining a cool and composed stance under tons of stress from so-called “Washington insiders” who want an “in” with The Obama Administration. She is also preparing to fill the position of Chief White House Florist.

Yes, it’s true my lovely Sister Greeks. First Lady Michelle Obama sent an acceptance letter for Honorary Member status into Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated. The Sorority's International President Barbara McKinzie indicated at the organization’s recent North Atlantic Regional Conference that the induction ceremony will take place privately at a future date and the sorority's leadership is in touch with Mrs. Obama.

The founding chapter of The Links, Incorporated (The Philadelphia Chapter) will induct five new members next month - two of whom are prominent in the media industry.

Houston based fashion designer Toni Whitaker is the subject of a 25 year fashion retrospective of her work. The exhibit will take place at the Houston Museum of African American Culture starting in May. I’m sure all of those fabulous Houston Socialites will be at the VIP reception on May 2nd.

Phoebe Haddon, National Parliamentarian of The Girlfriends, Inc. and a member of The Penn Towne Chapter of The Links, Inc. has been named the first Black dean of The University of Maryland School of Law.

Kim Heirston featured in Town & County Magazine

Happy Resurrection Sunday for all of those good Christians out there!

Easter is a part of the trio of holidays (Christmas and Mother's Day being the other two) where I tend to avoid church services. I'm not big on crowds and holiday-only worshippers who crowd pews only three times a year, so I watch services at home.

Sunday is also my day to wind down, read stacks of magazines, watch political commentary shows, and catch up with my long distance girlfriends via telephone.

While flipping through the May edition of Town & County Magazine, I was pleasantly excited to see Black faces galore. There is a nice photo spread on The Studio Museum of Harlem's Annual Gala and a lengthy story on the semi-elusive art dealer/socialite Kim Heirston (who allows T&C a view into her Bridgehampton home that she shares with hubby Richard Evans).

It's worth a read (although I must say that I had a moment of head tilting pause by the writer's description of Ms. Heirston as "strikingly self-possessed").

One can never fully understand a writer's intention with articles. But I dunno... self-possessed as a description of someone can often sound...how shall I say this...a lil' bit like a back handed complement.

What should Ms. Heirston be as a Black woman who is an internationally renowned art dealer?

Maybe it's just me making much ado about nothing.

Anyhoo, good people enjoy the rest of your day!

Friday's Fabulous Flicks

This week’s flicks feature two of my favorite organizations that had the distinction of ringing the NASDAQ Closing Bell this month.

Needless to say, I am thrilled!

The first flick features Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated’s North Atlantic Regional Director Evelyn Sample-Oates and International President Barbara McKinzie were joined by several sorority sisters on April 1, 2009 to ring the bell and kick off the North Atlantic Regional Conference in New York City.

The second flick features The Links, Incorporated Greater New York Chapter’s President Dr. Minta Spain (center) rang the Closing Bell along with other chapter members on April 9, 2009 to celebrate the chapter’s 60th anniversary. Their annual Easter Luncheon Fashion Show will take place on Saturday April 11, 2009.

Congratulations to my lovely Sorors and super Sister Links!

Have a great weekend everyone and Happy Easter!

April In Full Bloom

Whew!

What a month so far!

The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated North Atlantic Regional Conference was a good time had by all 3,100 estimated attendees. It was a quick trip for me to handle a lil' sorority business before jetting home. I'll upload some pics for you to see soon.

Unfortunately, I'm going to miss The Greater New York Chapter of The Links' Annual Easter Luncheon Fashion Show. My own Links chapter is meeting on the same day and I have to be there. But I know it will be super-duper fabulous affair. Hopefully, I'll be able to get some photos from some of my Sister Links so that we can enjoy all of the fashion and flair together.

I'm also packing my bags for Roanoke, VA for The Eastern Area of The Links, Incorporated Conference next week. It should be an interesting gathering and lucky for me, Special Friend is coming along.

I will have pictures galore when I return but folks, it is the mountains...so I may not be able to chat with you in real time.

In the meanwhile, I should have some juicy tidbits for you in the next week or so. All good news of course and definitely worth sharing.

Stay tuned...

Friday's Fabulous Flick

This week’s flick features Super Socialite Susan Fales-Hill, Karin Sadove, Joyce Brown, and Terry Agins last month at The Fashion Institute of Technology and FIT’s Educational Foundation of the Fashion Industries Annual Gala at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City. Joyce Brown is FIT’s first African American President.

Good people, I’m hanging out with some of my Sorors this weekend in NYC at the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. North Atlantic Regional Conference.

I hope that you have a fun weekend as well!

Cheers!

Chatting Away

We had fun during our first live Facebook chat where we talked about relationships, dating, and other hot topics.

Hopefully, for those who are still a bit sheepish in coming into the realm of social technology - fear not. Our Facebook community is full of interesting, well versed, and intelligent people.

In the meanwhile, I'm interested in hearing your plans for this Spring.

Shoot me an email to let me know what you're working on.

For me, it's the fine art of saying 'no' while leaving doors open for future possibilities.

Cheers all!
