As many of you know, Ms. Lena Horne passed recently at the age of 92. Ms. Horne was an active Civil Rights advocate and Honorary Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.
Beyond giving the world her talent, she helped plant the seeds of success for many other Black actresses to follow. She demonstrated that Black female talent could be graceful, elegant, and regal - which was in sharp contrast of the images of Black women on screen in the early days of Hollywood.
National Public Radio (NPR) posted an interesting retrospective on Ms. Horne's life that is worth reading.
She will be missed. Her contributions and commitment to representing the Black woman as beautiful should remind all of us of her personal sacrifices.
And it should not be a legacy squandered or taken for granted.
