On Vac-Cay Baby!

I’ll be taking a lil’ break from blogging from June 28th until July 9th 2010. The “Friday Fabulous Flick” will resume on July 9th. I will still Tweet what’s happening in my world in case you want to follow along.

Those of you who follow me on Facebook and Twitter know that I have been traveling between Washington, DC, Philadelphia, and Atlantic City recently. Next on the agenda is The Links National Assembly in Detroit. Upon my return home, I shall gather myself (and do laundry) for a beach trip to Rehoboth Beach, DE.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t swing a trip to the Alpha Kappa Alpha Boule this year but I’ll catch you ladies soon!

Oh...and for the smarty-pants Mama/Poppa figures out there (you know who you are), yes I plan to sleep and get some rest as well (*grins*).

I’ll be flying high and energized upon my return so we’ll have LOTS to chat about.

Cheers!

The Rise of South Africa's 'Black Diamonds'

Although, I primarily focus on most things American with this blog, I enjoy reading and learning about other Black middle class cultures from around the world. But for a ton of reasons, it's been rather difficult to gain access to reliable data on the Black middle class outside of the United States.

So I am really pleased that South Africa’s rising middle class (referred to as ‘Black Diamonds’) is gaining international attention. Out of the ashes of apartheid, this group of upwardly mobile professionals has an estimated $250 million in spending power while increasing their ranks about 30% each year.

This group (who loves driving BMWs) will be fun to watch as they begin to craft out a philanthropic focus targeted to those less fortunate.

Interestingly enough, I haven't seen any stories about this group covered on any of our popular Black blogs.

So, I’ll keep my ears to the global ground for exciting ‘Black Diamonds’ trend spotting.

And, I am soooo sure my SA readers will keep us in the loop too!

Stacie Scott Turner Joins 'Real DC Housewives' Cast

Yesterday, Twitter and the Internet was all ablaze with new regarding the cast of Bravo’s new installment of the ‘Real Housewives.’ This time the show will be set in Washington, DC and will include the second bi-racial cast in the franchise’s history (the first being Season 1 of Orange County).

Rumors began to swirl last October in Washingtonian Magazine that Real Estate entrepreneur Stacie Scott Turner was a part of the cast. Bravo confirmed this information as accurate yesterday.

According to information on her website, Mrs. Turner is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and Jack and Jill of America, Inc. She is also very politically active and has fund raised for several campaigns. Mrs. Turner has earned an undergraduate degree from Howard University and a Harvard University MBA.

I’m sure that you’ll keep me informed of the goings-on with this Housewives show.By the way, Mrs. Knuckleheaded Gate Crasher is a part of the cast as well. Bravo backtracked on their initial plans to place her on the curb.
