Last month the National Academy celebrated its 2012 Spring Gala at its newly-renovated Beaux arts home, honoring renowned artist and scholar David Driskell with the 2012 Lifetime Achievement Award. Mr. Driskell is emeritus professor at the University of Maryland, College Park (where the David C. Driskell Center for the Study of Visual Arts and Culture of African Americans and the African Diaspora is housed).

Mr. Driskell is a leading expert in African American art. He has served as cultural advisor to Camille O. and William H. Cosby and curator of the Cosby Collection of Fine Arts. In 2000, Mr. Driskell received the National Humanities Medal from President Bill Clinton in a White House ceremony. In 2007, he was elected as a National Academician by the National Academy.
